A writing birthday

I’ve been writing a lot lately. I’ve started a new writing project. I was uber excited about it last week. Now, I’m fairly excited about it. It’s best really. When I’m overly excited I just end up worrying about it working out. Today is my birthday. I’ve spent the day writing, submitting, and doing laundry. I have two new stories out right now. I wanted to finish another today but I think I’m about out of time. I’ll have to go to bed eventually. I do have to get up some time tomorrow morning. I took the day off but I do have an appointment. I’ve been thinking that this writing thing would be much easier if I didn’t have a job to get in the way. But I’m pretty sure that I would procrastinate, get even less done, and be completely broke. What I really need to do is win the lottery. I wonder if I can arrange that.

Found

Ok so my One Minute Weird Tale got rejected. It’s fine though. I thought it was pretty witty but it was pretty short too. According to Jen I may be rejected 38 more times. Well, I still have some stuff out there right now.
Bonus, while going through some old stuff I found a folder. Inside was a story I started in high school. It’s more than 10 years old now. Maybe it’s time to finish it. It’s hand written so it will take me a while to type it but as I go along I can make changes. I think that’s pretty cool.

May Story

Submission of the month. I’ve been thinking that I should work on 1 short story a month for submission…mostly because that seems to be the pace I work at. So for the month of May I submitted a story to The First Line called ‘I Am Not Amused’. The sucky thing about being dyslexic is that it hampers the editing process. I have a difficult time catching my own errors.
I haven’t decided where I will submit next month but it’s time to pick a place. I’m steadily increasing my word count. I would really like to improve my ability to grab people and hold onto them (no not physically). I suppose that’s my area to focus on this month as well.
Updates soon!

Another Submission

I submitted a one minute weird tale to Weird Tales, of course. They are only open to this kind of submission at this time. I have been working on two other short stories lately and I’ve managed to get myself stuck on both of them. I’m going to have to get myself unstuck. One of them needs to be turned in by May first.
I hope Weird Tales likes my little bit of flash fiction. I hope the economy improves soon. It’s making it pretty hard to find anyone who is taking submissions.
The medieval fair is this weekend in Norman, Ok. I’m going on Sunday. Maybe I’ll get unstuck there.

Mar. 21st, 2009

I am:
James Tiptree, Jr. (Alice B. Sheldon)
In the 1970s she was perhaps the most memorable, and one of the most popular, short story writers. Her real life was as fantastic as her fiction.

Which science fiction writer are you?

Rejected

It’s not as bad as I thought it would be. They were pretty nice about it. I got my first rejection letter…well, email. Flash Fiction Online turned my story down. So I opened it up and reread it for the first time since I sent it off. Ok, it needs some editing. What sounded great then sounds stiff now. Oh and there was a mistake in the first sentence…the first one! Crap. I didn’t catch that a bunch of times. Morgan caught it when she read it but it was after I had already sent it off. Well, I still think it’s a good story but I have to improve the story telling. I think I’ll change the title, too.
I guess being rejected isn’t the worst thing on earth but being accepted is a whole lot better.

King Cake

I have been spending a lot of time at work. I’m still at work when I’m at home half of the time. It doesn’t leave a lot of time for my other self; my writing self. I have found time in the last month to write another short story and submit it. But it seems like I have less and less time. I am in the middle of reading three books right now and one is for work. The book for work has to win out so I can get it finished. Oh and I am re-watching Dead Like Me. I just picked up the movie that came out on Tuesday but I want to see both seasons again before I watch the movie. There’s just not enough time for everything I want to do. BTW it’s time for Mardi Gras! We are making gumbo and king cake today (No time on Fat Tuesday to cook). Let the Good Times Roll!

Entered another contest

I entered another flash fiction contest today. I got angry about something that happened at the store today and I came home and turned it into a story. The format is a little experimental for me and it is completely unrelated to the stuff I have been writing lately. Maybe that’s a good thing. I did have to pay an entry fee but regardless of whether I place or not they will critique it. That’s a bonus. I wish more contests would offer that. I think I am going to find some more to enter. Wish me luck!
